Celebrating 15 Years of International Jazz Day & the 250th Anniversary of the United States
Established by the United Nations and UNESCO in 2011 with the vision of Chicago’s own legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock, International Jazz Day brings the world together every April 30 to celebrate jazz’s role in fostering peace, intercultural dialogue, and mutual understanding. This global initiative unites countries and communities, demonstrating the power of music to transcend borders. Chicago has officially been selected as the Global Host City for International Jazz Day 2026 (learn more on UN news) as it marks its 15th anniversary on April 30, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

NEW BRUNSWICK Jazz Project will celebrate its 17th anniversary with a landmark performance in its Emerging Artists Series. The Jazz Composers, is curated by the internationally acclaimed educator and conductor Dr. Anthony Branker and will feature a sextet of rising stars performing original student compositions. The performance will take place April 14 at Tavern on George, with a featured set at 7 p.m. followed by an open jam session at 8:30. Since its inception in 2010 at a small sushi restaurant on George Street, the Emerging Artists Series has served as an incubator for the next generation of jazz talent.
By providing students from Rutgers' Mason Gross School of the Arts, Princeton, and William Paterson a professional stage to hone their chops alongside seasoned pros, the series has helped launch numerous professional careers. “It seemed fitting to ask Tony to put on a special event featuring students together,” said Jazz Project co-founder Mike Tublin. “Tuesday night is their night. We’ve watched these young musicians develop incredible passion and skill over the years.” Jazz Project co-founder Jimmy Lenihan added: “This event is a double celebration. We are marking Jazz Appreciation Month and honoring our own 17-year journey of bringing world-class jazz to New Brunswick.”

Branker, a Mason Gross faculty member and the Founding Director of Jazz Studies at Princeton U, will spotlight the compositional prowess of his students. The sextet features: Michael Price (alto sax), Matt Estabrook (tenor sax), Tahj Walsh (trumpet), James Pakhamou (piano), Jeff Andolaro (bass) and Jonah Kantro (drums). The program will debut original works by Price, Estabrook, Walsh, Pakhamou, Seraphina Taylor, Maya Anand, Ed Crisonino and Kristin Field.

The New Brunswick Jazz Project will also be celebrating its 17th birthday on Thursday, April 16, with Mike Bond leading a quartet featuring Todd Bashore, Adam Nussbaum and Mike Karn.
